“Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”
— Luke 18:1
Persistent prayer is the kind that keeps going when answers are slow and hope grows thin. Many of us pray once, twice, a hundred times, and still the situation has not changed. Does God hear? Should we keep asking? Jesus addressed this directly, telling a parable so "that men always ought to pray and not lose heart" (Luke 18:1). Persevering prayer is not nagging an unwilling God; it is the faith that refuses to give up on a good one.
If you are weary in prayer, this guide is for you.
The Parable of the Persistent Widow
Jesus told of a widow who kept coming to an unjust judge until he granted her request, simply because she would not quit (Luke 18:2-5). Then He drew the contrast: if even a corrupt judge eventually responds to persistence, "shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him?" (Luke 18:7). The point is not that God is reluctant, but that He is far more willing than any earthly authority. Our persistence is not meant to wear Him down; it is meant to keep our hearts tender and trusting while we wait.
Continuing to ask is itself an act of faith, declaring that we still believe God is able and good.
Holding On When the Answer Is "Not Yet"
Sometimes God's answer is "wait," and waiting is hard. Even Paul pleaded three times for his thorn to be removed, and God's answer was, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:8-9). The delay was not denial; it was a deeper gift. We can keep asking while also trusting that God may be doing something we cannot yet see.
Persevering prayer holds two things together: bold, repeated asking and humble surrender. We pray "not My will, but Yours, be done" (Luke 22:42) even as we keep knocking.
You Do Not Have to Wait Alone
One of the great helps in persevering is praying with others. When your own faith flags, a community can carry you, reminding you of God's promises and praying when you cannot. This is exactly what our free prayer wall offers: a place to bring a long-standing burden and find people who will keep lifting it with you. If you are wrestling with silence, read our reflection on when God seems silent, and consider how fasting and prayer can deepen your seeking. Keep praying, friend. The God who told us not to lose heart will not lose sight of you.
